the River
Meets the Sky
The Gallegos River is a low-gradient, meandering waterway that begins at the confluence of the Rubens and Penitentes Rivers, stretching approximately 112 miles before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Renowned worldwide as a premier Brown Trout fishery, the Gallegos attracts anglers from all corners of the globe seeking the thrill of catching these powerful and often trophy-sized trout, frequently exceeding 20 pounds.
At Karku, we fish in more than 40 carefully selected, named pools along the river, each offering unique challenges and rewarding possibilities for fly anglers.
With its ever-changing light, shifting winds, and untouched Patagonian landscape, the Gallegos is more than a river — it’s a living classroom for fly fishers. Every bend presents a new lesson in reading the stream, mastering the cast, and connecting with nature in its purest form.
From Passion to Purpose: Our Story
Karku means “the other side of the river” in the ancient Tehuelche language — a tribute to Patagonia’s native people.
Founded by Sergio and Luisa, Karku Fly Fishing grew from a tent by the river into an eco-friendly lodge that welcomes anglers from around the world.
With over 40 km of waters and personalized service, we offer an authentic Patagonian adventure where nature, fishing, and friendship flow together.

A Return to the River: Why Karku Lodge Feels Like Coming Home
Decades spent guiding hunters and anglers will give any person a finely tuned radar for the authentic. When you make your living on the water, you quickly learn to separate an operation that merely looks the part from one that genuinely delivers. There is certainly a time and a place for the traditional five-star lodge experience—the multi-course tasting menus, the spa treatments, the white tablecloths. But sometimes, what you’re really searching for isn’t thread count; it’s the quiet, unadulterated magic you felt as a boy, stepping into a cold river alongside your dad and your uncles.
If you’ve been longing for that exact feeling—a return to the roots of the sport without sacrificing comfort—I found it at Karku Fly Fishing on Argentina’s Río Gallegos.
Set in an old farmhouse on a working, century-old estancia, Karku offers a different kind of luxury. It is delightfully unpretentious and deeply personal. It’s an honest, high-value operation that focuses its resources entirely on what matters most: the water, the fish, and the camaraderie.
The absolute solitude is what truly sets this operation apart. They strictly limit the camp to just four rods per week across more than 40 kilometers of private water. Let that sink in. In an era where finding a quiet bend on world-class water often means navigating a parade of drift boats, having the wild, sweeping expanse of the Gallegos almost entirely to yourself is the ultimate premium experience. You aren’t hurried along by a ticking clock or another group on your heels; you can actually breathe, read the water, and fish at a gentleman’s pace.
Then there is Sergio, the founder and head guide. My years of guiding taught me exactly what separates a good guide from a master of the craft, and watching Sergio work is a masterclass. His knowledge of the Gallegos’ 40-plus named pools is so profound that fishing with him feels like having a distinctly unfair advantage. He reads the ever-changing Patagonian wind and the meandering river like a well-worn book, effortlessly putting you in the exact right position to swing a fly for massive sea-run brown trout. It reminded me of quietly following my uncles through the brush, trusting implicitly that they knew exactly where the big ones were hiding.
Off the water, the nostalgia only deepens. The eco-cabin is warm, clean, and endlessly cozy, complete with a roaring fire and Starlink to stay connected if you need it. Noni’s home-cooked Patagonian meals—and the traditional Argentine asado grilled over open flames—are the kind of hearty, soul-warming fare a fisherman craves after a long day in the wind. The hospitality is incredibly attentive, but it comes from the heart, not a corporate training manual.
Karku Fly Fishing proves that you don’t need a luxury spa to have a world-class Patagonian experience. It’s an operation built for the seasoned angler who knows that the rarest luxuries in modern fly fishing are good people, wild fish, and exclusive access to a quiet river. It will remind you exactly why you picked up a fly rod in the first place. Highly recommended.
Our week at Camp Karku this year was later in the season and the river ran high and dirty for most of the week.
Despite that, Sergio and his teams’ experience and local knowledge meant we all caught plenty of fish.
Karku is a unique place to stay. An old farmhouse on a working Estancia, it’s very different from the glitzy camps on Rio Grand and elsewhere. It appears fairly basic at first glance, but the hospitality is personal and from the heart. It is comfortable in all the best ways.
Noni’s thoughtful touches are noticeable everywhere and Anna keeps things warm and ship shape. It feels like a second home and the team so clearly love being in this special and intimate place. You can just relax and appreciate the vast beauty of this wilderness.
When you want to fish hard, Sergio and Daniel are always willing. When you feel the wind and weather are getting the upper hand, Noni keeps the delicious home made food flowing. You will not go hungry!
All in all, fantastic sea trout water and a tight knit, intimate team of great people who clearly just want to make your stay memorable. They succeeded.
The best Lodge I ever been to!
I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful place twice in the last two years and just love it. The fishing and guiding is top notch, everyone will do the best they can to give you an awesome time. Even for me as a young solo traveler I had absolutely nothing to worry about while flying down south to RGL.
I would 100% recommend this lodge and would always comeback!
